Kelvin Kaveesh Gounder, a 20-year-old psychology student from the University of the South Pacific, is on a mission to make a meaningful difference in his community through mental health support and community service. Residing in Nakasi, he is dedicated to honing his counseling and advocacy skills to tackle the complexities of psychosocial issues affecting individuals around him.
Gounder believes that his educational pursuits will empower him to facilitate social change and finds great fulfillment in helping people navigate their challenges, which he views as a deeply rewarding aspect of psychology and social work. He has a particular interest in Japanese culture, having studied it within his psychology program, recognizing its rich social and historical context and potential applications in social work.
His academic journey has been enriched by hands-on experiences at the USP, notably his participation in the Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths (JENESYS) program. This experience not only deepened his appreciation for Japanese culture but also fueled his desire to forge meaningful relationships with local communities and engage in artistic and cultural endeavors while in Japan.
Moreover, Gounder’s commitment to community service is reinforced by his involvement with the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) Fiji, where he actively promotes vegetarianism. He draws parallels between Hindu beliefs and Japanese spirituality, noting the cultural similarities he recognized in his studies.
His enthusiasm resonates with the inspiring efforts of others who also strive for community upliftment, such as Megumi Gunji, a former marine engineer now teaching in Fiji, and Yuma Nagasaki, who established a school dedicated to nurturing the spirit of giving.
