Ratu Anare Roraqoca Davetanivalu, a 24-year-old from Nairukuruku, Naitasiri, has made a significant mark in his family history by becoming the first lawyer after being officially admitted to the Bar at the University of the South Pacific (USP). This milestone was celebrated on Tuesday amid much pride and emotion, dedicated to his late grandmother, who inspired him with her resilience during her long battle with breast cancer before passing away two years ago.
In expressing his sentiments about his achievement, Ratu Anare described the moment of being sworn in as a substantial relief, recognizing the responsibility attached to his new role. He emphasized that beginning a career in law is a gradual process that demands integrity and professionalism. He acknowledged the challenges faced during the Professional Diploma in Legal Practice (PDLP) program, describing it as one of the many hurdles along his career path.
Ratu Anare noted the importance of practical experience in the legal field, stating, “While theoretical knowledge is crucial, the university’s curriculum does not fully prepare students for the realities of legal practice,” highlighting a common sentiment among recent graduates, including Pio Navara, another new lawyer who shared his journey of overcoming significant financial barriers.
Both Ratu Anare and Navara are shining examples of how determination can overcome adversity. Navara, who faced financial challenges throughout his studies, turned to farming for support but eventually fulfilled his dream of becoming a lawyer at the age of 26.
