Young Kulas Set to Make History in World Cup Debut Against Brazil

The Digicel Fiji Young Kulas are poised for a historic moment as they prepare to face Brazil at Estadio Atanasio Girardot in Medellín, Colombia. This match marks the first time a Fijian women’s team has competed in a FIFA Women’s World Cup at any level, according to Fiji Football Association chief executive Mohammed Yusuf.

Yusuf highlighted the extensive training the team has undergone, including local practices and international friendlies against higher-ranked teams like Costa Rica and Morocco. “Our training sessions, both locally and internationally, have provided the Young Kulas with valuable experience leading up to their World Cup debut against Brazil,” Yusuf stated.

He praised the team’s readiness in all aspects, including physical, mental, and spiritual preparation. Yusuf expressed confidence in the players’ abilities, emphasizing their focus on taking each match as it comes. “It’s great to see the team fully prepared. We will take one game at a time, and I know the girls will get the job done and make our country proud,” he said.

Although they are in a tough Group B alongside France, Canada, and Brazil, the Young Kulas are ready to embrace the challenge. Yusuf acknowledged head coach Angeline Chua’s commitment and expressed trust in her selection of the best squad for the World Cup. The team includes three overseas players, including standout 15-year-old Aliana Vakaloloma, which adds further experience.

Yusuf appealed for strong support from fans as the Young Kulas aim to make history in their inaugural World Cup appearance. The match against Brazil is scheduled for 11 am today.
