Adi Tulia Nacola exemplifies the rising influence of young iTaukei women in the business sector. A seasoned entrepreneur, Nacola has transitioned from furniture and boat building to the realm of film production, marking her artistic diversity with her latest venture.

She has written, produced, and directed her debut short film titled “Bubu Belo,” in collaboration with Fiji-based Bure Productions. This 25-minute film, performed entirely in the iTaukei language, depicts the lives of two main characters, Bubu and Tamarra, who reside in a modest seaside cottage. Set in Verevere Village, Ra—the province of Nacola’s origin—the film illustrates Bubu’s efforts to teach Tamarra essential survival skills, emphasizing independence and respect for the land.

A pivotal turning point occurs when an unexpected visitor from their past confronts Bubu with a challenging choice, highlighting the tension between land dependence and urban migration—a struggle faced by many indigenous communities for years.

Nacola shares her insights, stating, “Opportunities might be in the big cities of the world, but there is also a place for opportunities in the village and remaining connected to one’s own land, to know where one comes from.” Her commitment to storytelling as a bridge between generations fuels the project, fostering a connection between elders and youth. The film aims to impart the valuable lessons of mutual respect and land stewardship.

The premiere of “Bubu Belo” will take place at Film Fiji’s office in Suva next week, with subsequent screenings planned for numerous villages and communities in Ra. This initiative, sponsored by Film Fiji, seeks to celebrate and communicate the significance of cultural roots and identity, paving the way for a brighter and more connected future.

This project showcases the power of storytelling in preserving cultural heritage and promoting community values. Adi Tulia Nacola’s inventive ventures serve as an inspiration for others to explore the rich tapestry of their own traditions and narratives.
