In a commendable display of compassion, Year 3 students from International School Suva have taken significant steps to positively impact their community, showcasing the essence of kindness throughout their school semester. Guided by the theme “people respond to needs within a community,” these young students engaged in projects that reflect their genuine concern for various causes.
Their initiative began in Term 3 with a cookie sale that successfully raised funds for the Suva Sexual Reproductive Health (SRH) Clinic, followed by a PE-thon aimed at benefiting the National Youth Band. Building upon this momentum, the students identified community needs that aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), allowing their efforts to contribute to a broader mission of global improvement.
The culmination of their endeavors was marked by a lively fundraiser featuring a variety of activities such as lemonade and popcorn stands, a clothes drive, a Canva-a-thon, and the sale of smoothies, cupcakes, ice cream, and cookies. Through their hard work, the students raised a remarkable total of $1,101.95, which was skillfully allocated to support multiple organizations, including the AWANA After-School Activity Club, the Samabula Old People’s Home, and the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Children’s Heart Hospital, among others.
This hands-on experience imparted valuable lessons in community action and fostered skills such as empathy and teamwork. Students expressed heartfelt motivations behind their support, emphasizing the impact of their contributions. For instance, Joel shared his desire to provide better play equipment for children in the AWANA club, while Caroline and Hanyang highlighted their commitment to single mothers at Homes of Hope for the betterment of their lives.
During their visits to various organizations, students also provided essential resources, including stationery for Lomary Primary School and board games for residents at the Samabula Old People’s Home, showing a deep understanding of their community’s diverse needs.
