Year 3 students at International School Suva recently demonstrated remarkable kindness through various community initiatives. Their efforts centered around the theme of how individuals can respond to the needs within their community.
The students launched their kindness campaign in Term 3 with a cookie sale, raising funds for the Suva Sexual Reproductive Health Clinic, followed by a PE-thon to support the National Youth Band. Building on this enthusiasm, they explored community needs, aligning their actions with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).
In the final term, they organized a vibrant fundraiser which included lemonade and popcorn stands, a clothes drive, a Canva-a-thon, and sales of smoothies, cupcakes, ice cream, and cookies. Their hard work culminated in an impressive fundraising total of $1,101.95. The students then applied their math skills to allocate the funds effectively to various local initiatives.
The beneficiaries of their charitable contributions included the AWANA After-School Activity Club, the Samabula Old People’s Home, Homes of Hope, St. Christopher’s Home, Lomary Primary School, the SPCA, and the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Children’s Heart Hospital. This hands-on experience not only enhanced the students’ understanding of community service but also fostered empathy and teamwork among them.
Students expressed their desire to make a difference through their actions. For example, Joel donated sports balls to the AWANA club, noting the need for proper equipment for play. Caroline and Hanyang Ma emphasized their wish to support single mothers through donations to Homes of Hope, advocating for a better life for their children. The group also provided stationery to Lomary Primary School to enhance the learning experience for students there.
Their community visits included monetary donations to the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Children’s Heart Hospital, where they learned about the need for funding for medical equipment, as surgeries are provided at no cost. Students also supported the SPCA, helping with donations for animal shelters, and brought board games to the elderly at the Samabula Old People’s Home, showing that kindness can bridge generations.
The initiative showcases the potential for young individuals to drive change, demonstrating that efforts, no matter how small, can make a significant impact. It serves as an inspiring reminder that fostering kindness in our youth paves the way for a compassionate and engaged future generation.
This engaging and heartwarming story reminds us all of the power of community involvement and the importance of nurturing empathy in our young people.
