Thirteen-year-old Damon Chen is gearing up for the Fiji Golf Open Championship next month, where he aims to make an impact in the sport. The Year 8 student from St Teresa Primary School in Ba has distinguished himself in the amateur golf junior category this season, starting with a victory in the Junior category at the Lautoka Open late last year. He has continued to build on his success with several wins at the Ba Golf Club.
Despite his young age, Chen’s commitment to mastering his golf swings is clear. His father, Chen Jin Shan, a businessman from Ba, serves as a constant source of motivation and support.
Damon began playing golf in Year 6 and aspires to turn professional by Year 11, hoping to become one of the youngest professional golfers in the nation. “I plan to play professional golf in Year 11 and be one of the youngest professional golfers in the country,” he stated.
Balancing academics and his love for golf poses a challenge, especially as he prepares for his Fiji Eighth Year Examination. “I usually train every day, but if there’s homework, I will focus on that and study for my exam,” he shared.
Looking to the future, Damon has ambitions of attending Stanford University and eventually settling in Australia to pursue a career as a professional golfer.
