At just 19 years old, Margaret King has made an impressive mark on Fiji’s hockey landscape. The talented goalkeeper played a pivotal role in Fiji’s stunning 8-2 win over Samoa during the Intercontinental Cup finals. Additionally, Fiji triumphed over NZ Pasifika in the finals of the Oceania Pacific Cup, securing two prestigious gold medals for the team at the event held at the National Hockey turf in Suva.
Margaret’s journey into hockey took an unexpected turn in 2018 while attending Nadi Sangam School. “I was in Form Three, and my teacher encouraged me to play because there weren’t many players in my class,” she fondly remembers. Coming from a family passionate about hockey, she credits her relatives for motivating her to excel in the sport—her sisters also participate, with one earning a spot as a non-traveling reserve this year.
Margaret’s unwavering commitment has led her to participate in three significant tournaments so far. After winning gold at the Pacific Games last year and gaining crucial experience at the World Cup in Oman, her determination continues to shine brightly. Embracing the challenges of her role as a goalkeeper, she states, “My role is simple: stop every ball that comes my way.”
