Sakiusa Bainivalu, a Year 12 student at Queen Victoria School, is thrilled about the opportunity to represent Fiji at the upcoming Asian Youth International Model United Nations (AYIMUN) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, scheduled for January 17-20, 2025. This prestigious event gathers youth leaders from around the globe to exchange ideas and work towards addressing important global issues.

Sakiusa views this as a significant milestone in his life, being his first time representing Fiji in a similar international forum. Hailing from Tabuya, Nabukelevu-ira, Kadavu, he expressed his excitement by stating, “This is a huge breakthrough for me. To be selected out of thousands of participants and to be around other people and share thoughts and opinions is phenomenal.”

His selection came after he penned an insightful essay addressing social challenges in Fiji, including domestic violence, rising cases of substance abuse, and cultural loss, and their societal impacts. Sakiusa believes that participating in the International MUN conference will enhance his capabilities as a leader.

To facilitate his trip, which his parents funded at a cost of U.S.$779 (FJ$1785) for accommodation, transportation, and meals, Sakiusa plans to pursue a medical career focused on combating non-communicable diseases upon his return.

This story highlights the potential of youth to make impactful contributions on international platforms and underscores the importance of education and global dialogue in shaping future leaders. It serves as an inspiration for young individuals to engage in important discussions surrounding social issues and aspire to make a change. Sakiusa’s journey is a reminder that dedicated efforts and a desire to learn can lead to remarkable opportunities.
