Moreen Ram, a mother and rice farmer, has been honored as the Best Young Farmer of the Year (Female) at the Fiji Rice Limited (FRL) 2023 President’s Farmers Award ceremony held in Labasa. The 35-year-old received her award from Fiji’s President, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, and expressed her pride in achieving this recognition. She encouraged more women to consider rice farming as a viable business opportunity.
Living in Muanidevo, Dreketi, Ms. Ram has dedicated seven years to developing her rice farming operation, with the steadfast support of her husband, who is a civil servant. He assists her on the farm whenever possible.
Ms. Ram revealed that her motivation to join the rice farming industry stems from her family’s long-standing involvement in it, with knowledge passed down from her parents. As the new season approaches in November, she is targeting a harvest of seven tonnes of rice paddy. Previously encountered issues with drainage and access to a harvester have been addressed through her participation in a farmers’ cooperative that allows them to share resources.
She described rice farming as a profitable venture, particularly noting a price increase from $850 to $1,000 per tonne last December that has incentivized farmers to continue in the field. To enhance her operations, she plans to seek subsidies for planting and weed control.
Encouraging women to explore the opportunities in rice farming, Ms. Ram highlighted the importance of determination, stating, “It may seem difficult, but nothing is impossible if you are determined.” Her aspirations for the future remain ambitious, as she aims to become the best farmer in Fiji, emphasizing that women can achieve anything with commitment to their goals.
