Young discus thrower Tyrone Ali is ramping up his training in preparation for the Pacific Mini Games scheduled for the end of this month in Palau. The rising star from Suva Grammar School is aiming high in the men’s discus event, having adjusted his training intensity and routines following his selection for the national team.

Ali shared that his current training regimen is tougher compared to previous competitions, noting, “Training right now is a bit harder than Cokes, because we usually do more heavier gym sessions now just to get to the standards of people older than you.” He also emphasized the importance of skilled coaching and the need to find suitable throwing locations outside the stadium, relying on support from his coaches, which he identifies as a significant boost.

As Ali and his teammates approach their competition, he acknowledges the pressure to perform, but feels well-prepared, thanks to the mental skills instilled in him by his coaches throughout his athletic journey. Balancing his training commitments with schoolwork has been challenging, given the lengthy commute from his home in Nausori to Suva Grammar School. However, he remains focused and positive about the upcoming games.

“I am very excited and determined,” Ali affirmed about his goal of winning a medal in Palau. He aims to not only excel in the Pacific Mini Games but also prepare for the Oceania Cup later this year.

His recent success at the Coca-Cola Games, where he secured a gold medal in the senior boys discus throw with a remarkable 45.78-meter throw, highlights his potential and readiness for international competition.

The excitement surrounding the Pacific Mini Games reflects a growing trend in Fijian athletics, similar to the journeys of other young athletes who are also gearing up to represent Fiji. Like Ali, many of his teammates, including Glenn Finau and Francis Bakaniceva, share stories of determination, resilience, and the vision to make their nation proud.

With the support of their coaches and community, the athletes are not just competing for medals but also inspiring the next generation of Fijian athletes to pursue excellence in sports. The upcoming games promise to be an excellent platform for showcasing their talent and furthering Fiji’s reputation in athletics on the international stage.
