Repeka Koroi and Veronika Rabuliwaisavu, talented athletes from Vudibasoga Catholic School in Seaqaqa, Macuata, have earned full scholarships from Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) High School to further their education. This recognition follows their exceptional performances at the 2024 Tuckers Ice-Cream Fiji Primary Schools Athletics Championships last month.

Koroi, hailing from Korovuli Village in Macuata, claimed victory with two gold medals in the Under-14 girls’ 800m and 1500m finals. Rabuliwaisavu, originally from Lomaloma Village, secured gold in the Under-13 girls’ 400m final and a silver medal in the 200m final.

The duo expressed gratitude towards their coach and teacher, Iosefo Apisai from Nasealevu Village, Macuata. Apisai shared his pride in having students who qualified for a prestigious school in Suva, where they can focus more effectively on their sports. He mentioned that their training was streamlined because they were hostel residents, allowing for consistent practice.

“I implemented a strict timetable, and I am proud to announce that our school took home the highest medal tally among the 12 schools in Macuata South, which included five gold, three silver, and two bronze medals,” Apisai stated. He also expressed appreciation to the parents for trusting the teachers with their children’s education and sports development while they stayed in the hostel.

Repeka, who aspires to be a primary school teacher, was the dux of her Year Eight class. “I dedicate my achievement to my father, Epeli Balawa, for supporting my scholarship journey,” she said. “My dream is to represent Fiji at the Olympic Games, and I believe with Jesus’ support, I can achieve anything.”

Veronika, at 13 years old, shared her excitement, being the first in her family to earn both gold and silver medals, along with a scholarship to study in Suva. “My father, a yaqona farmer, is thrilled and has blessed me to pursue my passion for running,” she noted. “Representing a prestigious school is truly an honor, and I am grateful to the teachers for selecting me.”

Inoke Biaunisala, the head teacher at Vudibasoga Catholic School, expressed his satisfaction with the achievements. “Last year, we had one female student selected for a scholarship through similar competitions, and this year, the opportunity expanded,” he remarked. He emphasized the school’s goal to prepare more students for similar achievements in the coming year.

Additionally, congratulations were extended to the bronze-winning athletes Solomone Togoaciri and Ester Natoni, as well as silver medalists Sakapo Lekileki in the Under-13 boys’ 1500m and 800m finals. Grace Vunibola also celebrated her gold in the Under-9 long jump, with Rufina Digadai winning gold in the Under-12 girls’ 800m final.

This inspiring story showcases not only athletic talent but also the support and opportunities available through dedication and community involvement. It reflects a bright future for young athletes as they pursue their dreams in education and sport.

In summary, this article highlights the outstanding achievements of two young athletes from Vudibasoga Catholic School, who have not only excelled in sports but have also been awarded scholarships for their future education, showcasing the positive impact of hard work and supportive mentorship.
