William Koi, an 18-year-old student from Kalabu Secondary School, is making headlines at the Suva Zone One Athletics competition. Leading up to the event, Koi took an entrepreneurial approach by selling ‘achar’ (pickled mangoes) to afford a pair of track shoes, a necessity for his preparation. His hard work paid off as he secured first place in the senior boys’ 100 meters event.
Koi expressed his determination in obtaining the shoes without relying on his family, stating, “I didn’t have a track shoe, and I didn’t want to ask my family to buy it because it is expensive. So I decided to sell something and save enough money to buy it.” His initiative not only demonstrates responsibility but also a strong work ethic, traits invaluable for a budding athlete.
With the finals for the 100 and 200m events approaching, Koi anticipates stiff competition but encourages his fellow athletes to come prepared. His journey reflects the broader trends in Fiji athletics, where young athletes are increasingly demonstrating resilience and entrepreneurial spirit.
Currently, the Suva Zone One Athletics competition is live on FBC Sports, showcasing the talents of young athletes like Koi, who symbolize the hope and potential of Fiji’s future in sports. Events like these not only highlight individual achievements but also foster a sense of community and sportsmanship among schools and participants.
This sports event exemplifies an encouraging growth in youth athletics in Fiji, paving the way for future stars and showcasing young talent that inspires others.
