Yoga has emerged as a valuable response to the growing concerns surrounding stress, mental health issues, and inactivity in Fiji, as emphasized by Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Professor Biman Prasad during the 11th International Day of Yoga celebration in Suva. He noted that yoga is not only a beneficial practice for physical well-being but also serves as an accessible and affordable mental health resource.

Professor Prasad highlighted yoga’s simplicity and inclusiveness, stating that it does not require any expensive equipment or facilities, making it suitable for individuals of all ages and backgrounds. He reiterated that one of yoga’s greatest strengths is its availability as a low-cost, non-invasive wellness tool, promoting a lifestyle that encourages both physical and mental health.

The theme for this year’s observance, “Yoga for One Earth, One Health,” underscores the interconnection between individual wellness and environmental stewardship. Professor Prasad encouraged Fijians to incorporate mindful practices into their daily lives, which resonate deeply with the values of Fiji’s culture regarding nature conservation.

Moreover, he extended his gratitude to the Indo-Fijian community for introducing yoga to Fiji, viewing it as a symbol of unity and peace. This acknowledgment aligns with the broader initiative to promote health-conscious living in Fiji, where numerous public figures and community leaders are advocating for healthier lifestyles and increased physical activity.

Recent discussions in Fiji highlight the alarming rise of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), associated with sedentary lifestyles and poor dietary choices. Fitness instructor Litiana Miller has previously urged Fijians to embrace movement and better nutrition to combat these trends. The promotion of yoga complements these efforts, serving as an engaging means for Fijians to enhance their overall health while fostering community spirit.

By embracing yoga and other physical activities, there is a collective hope that individuals in Fiji can take positive steps towards better health outcomes, contribute to a vibrant community, and cultivate sustainable living habits that benefit both personal well-being and the environment.
