The Yasawa district team is gearing up for the two-day Fiji Primary Schools Tuckers Ice Cream Games, which kick off today at Suva’s HFC Bank Stadium. With participation from 2000 athletes representing 21 districts nationwide, the event promises to be a vibrant showcase of talent and sportsmanship.

Isireli Koroituku, the jump coach for the Yasawa district team, expressed the team’s determination not just to participate but to strive for medal victories. “We have 105 athletes from eight schools in our district,” Koroituku noted. He emphasized that this year’s focus is distinctly on winning medals, unlike last year’s approach which was more about exposing the athletes to competition.

Despite facing challenges in securing accommodation for the event, Koroituku highlighted the team’s perseverance. They successfully organized fundraising activities including selling rootcrops, kava barrels, and hosting curry nights to support their journey. He extended heartfelt gratitude to the Yasawa community and local stakeholders for their relentless support in making this opportunity possible.

For many of the athletes, this is their first journey to Suva, marking a significant milestone in their young careers. The excitement is palpable, and the anticipation of competing on such a stage serves as motivation for the Yasawa team.

At the event, six districts from the Western Division are bringing a total of 718 athletes, while the North will contribute 635 athletes, and the Central and Eastern divisions are set to send 597 athletes, making this an incredible gathering of youthful sports talent.

In summary, while the Yasawa district team aims high for this competition, their journey has been made possible through community support and determination. The event not only fosters a spirit of competition but also offers a valuable experience for young athletes across Fiji as they strive to showcase their abilities and strive for success. The aspirations of these young competitors give hope for the future of sports in the region.
