The Yasawa district team is full of enthusiasm as they prepare for the two-day Fiji Primary Schools Tuckers Ice Cream Games, which commence today at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. This exciting event is set to welcome around 2000 athletes competing from 21 districts across Fiji.
Isireli Koroituku, the Yasawa district’s jump coach, highlighted the team’s aspirations, stating that they aim not just to participate but to earn medals to bring home. With a team comprised of 105 athletes from eight different schools, the preparations have been robust, and the team is looking forward to the competition ahead.
Koroituku noted that unlike last year’s focus on exposing their athletes to such events, this year, the priority is clear: winning medals. He shared that the journey to get to the games wasn’t without challenges, particularly regarding accommodation, which they managed to secure in the nick of time.
To fund their trip, the team engaged in various fundraising activities, including selling rootcrops, kava barrels, and hosting curry nights. Koroituku expressed profound gratitude to members of the Yasawa community and local supporters for their invaluable assistance, emphasizing that their presence at the games would not have been possible without collective efforts.
With many athletes experiencing their first trip to Suva, this event is not just a competition but an eye-opening opportunity for them. The Western Division has sent six districts with 718 athletes, while the North is represented by 635 athletes, and the Central and Eastern divisions confirm 597 participants among themselves.
The dedication and effort shown by the Yasawa district team embody the spirit of grassroots sports, highlighting community support and the transformative experiences that come with participating in events like these.
Summary: The Yasawa district team is poised to compete in the Fiji Primary Schools Tuckers Ice Cream Games, aiming to win medals for their community. They have faced challenges along the way but are grateful for community support and the opportunity to represent their district at this exciting event.
