The Yasawa district team has set ambitious goals as they prepare for the two-day Fiji Primary Schools Tuckers Ice Cream Games, which commenced today at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. This significant event is expected to feature approximately 2,000 athletes from 21 different districts across the nation.

Isireli Koroituku, the jump coach for the Yasawa team, expressed their commitment to not just participating in the Games, but also to winning medals to bring back home. The team comprises 105 athletes from eight schools within the district, and Koroituku noted that preparations have been progressing well as they look forward to the competition.

Unlike last year’s focus on exposure, this year’s strategy is centered on achieving medal wins. Koroituku acknowledged the challenges the team has faced in making it to the event, particularly regarding accommodation, but they managed to secure a place just days prior to the games.

The team has actively engaged in fundraising efforts, including selling root crops, kava barrels, and organizing curry nights. Koroituku expressed his deep appreciation for the support from members of the Yasawa community, local leaders, and stakeholders, emphasizing that their journey would not have been possible without this collective support.

Many of the athletes are making their first trip to Suva, which Koroituku described as an enlightening experience. In total, six districts from the Western Division are sending 718 athletes, while the Northern division will bring 635 and the Central and Eastern divisions have confirmed 597 athletes for the Games.

As the Yasawa team enters this competition, they embody the spirit of determination and community support, aiming to achieve their goal of bringing home medals. Their journey illustrates the value of hard work and collaboration in pursuing success in sports and life.

This event not only highlights athletic talent but also fosters community ties, making it an enriching experience for all participants involved.
