The Yasawa district team is set to compete in the two-day Fiji Primary Schools Tuckers Ice Cream Games, which commence today at Suva’s HFC Bank Stadium. This event is expected to host around 2,000 young athletes from 21 districts throughout the nation.

Isireli Koroituku, the jump coach for the Yasawa district team, shared their ambitious goal of not just participating but also winning medals to bring back home. The team consists of 105 athletes representing eight schools in the Yasawa district. Koroituku highlighted that their preparations have been smooth and they are looking forward to challenging competitions ahead.

Unlike previous years, where the focus was primarily on exposure, this time the Yasawa team is determined to achieve podium finishes. Koroituku acknowledged that the path to this competition was not without its challenges, especially regarding accommodation, which they have only recently secured. They rallied community support by organizing fundraising activities, including selling root crops, kava barrel, and holding curry nights.

Expressing gratitude, Koroituku credited the Yasawa community, local leaders, and supporters for their invaluable assistance in making this journey possible. He noted that many athletes are traveling to Suva for the first time, opening their eyes to new experiences and opportunities.

In addition to Yasawa’s delegation, the Western Division is sending six districts with a combined total of 718 athletes, while the North brings 635 athletes, and the Central and Eastern divisions contribute 597 athletes to the games.

These games represent not just a competition but a moment of unity, showcasing the talent and spirit of young athletes across Fiji. The Yasawa team’s determination serves as an inspiring reminder of the power of community and support in achieving goals.

This event is a wonderful opportunity for all involved to celebrate youth, sport, and the collective efforts that make such occasions possible.
