The Yasawa district team is eager to make an impact at the two-day Fiji Primary Schools Tuckers Ice Cream Games, which kicked off today at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. With participation from 2,000 athletes representing 21 districts throughout the nation, the event is poised to be a showcase of young talent.

Isireli Koroituku, the jump coach for the Yasawa team, expressed a determined spirit, stating that the team’s goal is not just to take part, but to earn medals to bring back home. The Yasawa team consists of 105 athletes hailing from eight schools within the district, and preparations have been going smoothly, according to Koroituku.

Unlike last year, where the focus was primarily on exposing young athletes to competitive environments, this year the emphasis has shifted to achieving medal wins. Koroituku highlighted the challenges faced by the team, particularly in terms of accommodation, which they were able to resolve just days before the event. Fundraising efforts, including selling root crops, kava barrels, and hosting curry nights, have helped support their journey.

Koroituku expressed deep gratitude to the Yasawa community, the Tikinas, and shareholders for their generous support, emphasizing that their collective effort has made this participation possible. He also noted that many of the athletes are visiting Suva for the first time, and the experience has been enlightening for them.

Additionally, athletes from six districts in the Western Division are attending with a total of 718 athletes, while the Northern Division is contributing 635 athletes, and the Central and Eastern divisions bring in 597 athletes for this prestigious competition.

In summary, the Yasawa district team is prepared and motivated to achieve success at the Fiji Primary Schools Tuckers Ice Cream Games, supported by their community as they embark on this exciting journey. Their resolve to win medals exemplifies the spirit of competition and collaboration, which is vital for the growth and development of young athletes in Fiji.
