The Yasawa district team is gearing up for the highly anticipated Fiji Primary Schools Tuckers Ice Cream Games, which kicks off today at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. This event is set to welcome around 2,000 athletes from 21 districts across the nation.

Coach Isireli Koroituku expressed the team’s determination to not only participate but to secure medals to bring back home. With a roster of 105 athletes representing eight local schools, Koroituku shared that their preparations have gone smoothly, creating a sense of excitement leading up to the competition.

Unlike last year, when the focus was primarily on providing exposure for the athletes, this year’s objective is clear: winning medals. Koroituku acknowledged the difficulties the team faced in reaching Suva, especially regarding accommodation. However, he noted that they successfully arranged lodging just days before the event.

To fund their journey, the team engaged in various fundraising activities, including selling root crops, kava barrels, and hosting curry nights. Koroituku extended his heartfelt gratitude to the Yasawa community and local supporters, highlighting that their collective efforts were instrumental in making this journey possible.

Many of the athletes are traveling to Suva for the first time, and Koroituku remarked on how this experience has opened their eyes to new possibilities. The Western Division is sending 718 athletes, while the North has 635, and the Central and Eastern divisions are contributing 597 athletes to the competition.

This event represents a significant opportunity for the young athletes to showcase their talents and compete at a higher level, fostering a spirit of teamwork and sportsmanship. The determination and community support surrounding the Yasawa district team serve as a shining example of how grassroots efforts can culminate in joyful experiences and achievements.

In summary, the Yasawa team aims for victory at the Fiji Primary Schools Tuckers Ice Cream Games, fueled by community support and a strong sense of purpose. Their journey emphasizes resilience and the power of coming together as a community to achieve common goals.
