The Yasawa district team is gearing up for the two-day Fiji Primary Schools Tuckers Ice Cream Games, which kick off today at Suva’s HFC Bank Stadium. The event is set to host around 2,000 athletes representing 21 districts from across the nation.

Isireli Koroituku, the Yasawa district team’s jump coach, emphasized that their aim this year extends beyond mere participation; they are determined to bring home medals. The team comprises 105 athletes from eight schools within the Yasawa district, and according to Koroituku, preparations have been proceeding smoothly, heightening their anticipation for the competition.

Koroituku noted a shift from last year’s focus of exposing young athletes to competition; this year’s strategy is firmly rooted in medal aspirations. He acknowledged the challenges the team faced in reaching this stage, particularly around securing accommodation, which was ultimately resolved just days before the event.

The team engaged in various fundraising efforts, including selling root crops, hosting kava barrel nights, and curry nights, all aimed at supporting their travel and participation. Koroituku conveyed his gratitude to the Yasawa community, local ‘Tikinas’, and all stakeholders who contributed to this collective endeavor.

He highlighted that many of the athletes are experiencing Suva for the first time, marking a significant milestone in their lives. The competition will also see participation from six districts from the Western Division, which collectively will send 718 athletes, with the North contributing 635 athletes, and the Central and Eastern divisions confirming 597 participants.

This event not only showcases young athletes’ talents but also fosters community support and involvement. The excitement and determination shown by the Yasawa team highlight the potential for growth and achievement in youth sports, offering hope and inspiration for future generations.

In summary, the Yasawa district team is excited about competing in the Fiji Primary Schools Tuckers Ice Cream Games, focused on winning medals and building community support while providing athletes with valuable experiences beyond their home turf.
