The Yasawa district team has set ambitious goals as they participate in the two-day Fiji Primary Schools Tuckers Ice Cream Games, which commenced today at Suva’s HFC Bank Stadium. The event is set to welcome 2,000 athletes representing 21 districts from across the nation.

Isireli Koroituku, the jump coach for the Yasawa district team, shared that they are determined not just to compete but to win medals that they can proudly bring back home. This year, the Yasawa team consists of 105 athletes from eight local schools. Koroituku noted that preparations have been smooth, and the team is excited for the upcoming challenges.

Last year’s focus was on exposing the athletes to competition; however, Koroituku emphasized that their sights are firmly set on medals this time around. He acknowledged the difficulties the team faced leading up to the event, particularly around accommodation, but expressed optimism after securing a place just days before the games.

To fund their journey, the team organized fundraising activities including selling root crops, kava, and hosting curry nights. Koroituku conveyed gratitude towards the Yasawa community, the ‘Tikinas’, and stakeholders whose support made their participation possible. He highlighted the significance of representing their district and the motivation to succeed.

Many of the young athletes are experiencing travel to Suva for the first time, marking this event as a significant and eye-opening journey for them. In total, six districts from the Western Division are bringing 718 athletes, while the North contributes 635, and the Central and Eastern divisions have confirmed the participation of 597 athletes.

This event is a wonderful opportunity for the athletes to showcase their skills and foster community spirit, and it highlights the dedication and enthusiasm of young sports talent in Fiji. The collective effort from various districts demonstrates a strong commitment to nurturing future champions.
