The Yasawa district team is gearing up for the two-day Fiji Primary Schools Tuckers Ice Cream Games, which kicks off today at Suva’s HFC Bank Stadium. This year’s event will host around 2,000 young athletes representing 21 districts nationwide.
Isireli Koroituku, the jump coach for the Yasawa team, expressed their ambition to not just take part but to bring home medals. With a squad comprising 105 athletes from eight schools, Koroituku reported that preparations have been solid, and the team is excited about the upcoming competition. Last year’s strategy focused on providing exposure for the young athletes, but this time the goal is clear: to secure medals.
However, their path has not been without challenges. Koroituku highlighted the difficulties they faced in organizing accommodations, which they only finalized in the last few days. Despite these obstacles, he emphasized the importance of staying positive, and they successfully raised funds through community initiatives, including selling root crops and hosting curry nights.
Koroituku extended his gratitude to the Yasawa community, local ‘Tikina’ leaders, and shareholders for their invaluable support. He acknowledged that the opportunities provided to the athletes are significant, especially for many who are visiting Suva for the first time, making this a truly enlightening experience.
From the Western Division, six districts will collectively bring 718 athletes, while the North will send 635, and the Central and Eastern divisions are set to contribute 597 athletes to the competition.
This event not only showcases the spirit of sportsmanship but also highlights the moments of unity and collaboration within the community, as the Yasawa team prepares to make their mark on a larger stage. It’s a testament to what can be achieved with resilience, teamwork, and community support, offering hope and inspiration to future generations of athletes.
