The Yasawa district team has set ambitious goals as they participate in the two-day Fiji Primary Schools Tuckers Ice Cream Games, which kicks off today at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. This year’s event is set to host approximately 2,000 young athletes from 21 districts nationwide.
Jump coach Isireli Koroituku shared insights about the team, stating that their aim is to not only participate but to compete for medals to take back home. With a squad of 105 athletes from eight schools in the Yasawa district, Koroituku emphasized that their preparations have been encouraging, and they are eager to face the competition.
Unlike last year’s participation, which prioritized experience for the athletes, Koroituku conveyed a clear intention this time around: bringing home medals. He acknowledged the challenges faced by the team in their journey to the Games, notably in securing accommodation, which was finalized just days before the event.
The team engaged in various fundraising activities, including selling root crops and organizing curry nights, to support their participation. Koroituku expressed profound gratitude to the Yasawa community, local ‘Tikinas’, and shareholders for their generous support throughout the journey.
Many athletes on the team are experiencing their first trip to Suva, making it a remarkable experience. Notably, the Western Division has sent six districts with 718 athletes, while the North is represented by 635 athletes, and the Central and Eastern divisions have confirmed a total of 597 competitors.
This event not only showcases the talent of young athletes but also highlights the importance of community support in nurturing future sports stars. The Yasawa team’s determination and preparation could inspire many, reinforcing the spirit of competition and teamwork.
In summary, the Yasawa district team is ready for the Fiji Primary Schools Tuckers Ice Cream Games, aiming for victory and fostering community spirit while navigating challenges along the way.
