The Yasawa district team is geared up for the two-day Fiji Primary Schools Tuckers Ice Cream Games, which commenced today at Suva’s HFC Bank Stadium. This year’s event is set to feature around 2,000 athletes from 21 different districts across Fiji.
Isireli Koroituku, the jump coach for the Yasawa district team, expressed the team’s determination to not just participate but to bring home medals. “We have 105 athletes in the team this year from eight schools in the district,” he stated, adding that preparations have gone smoothly leading up to the competition.
Koroituku shared that last year’s focus was more on exposing the athletes to the competition, but this time the aim is clear: winning. The team faced challenges, especially around accommodations, but remained optimistic and successfully secured housing shortly before the games began.
To support their journey, the team engaged in various fundraising activities, including selling rootcrops, organizing kava barrel sales, and hosting curry nights. Koroituku extended his heartfelt appreciation to the Yasawa community, local ‘Tikinas,’ and shareholders, acknowledging their critical support that made this journey possible.
Many athletes are making their first trip to Suva, which has proven to be an enlightening experience for them. The event will also see participation from other districts in the Western Division with 718 athletes, the North with 635, and the Central and Eastern divisions fielding 597 athletes in total.
The encouraging spirit of teamwork, community support, and the excitement of first-time experiences in Suva provide a hopeful outlook for the Yasawa team as they head into the competition, demonstrating the potential for growth and achievement among young athletes.
Overall, the Yasawa district’s commitment to excellence and strong community bonds highlight the positive impact of grassroots sports initiatives.
