The Yasawa district team is eager to showcase their talent at the two-day Fiji Primary Schools Tuckers Ice Cream Games, which commenced today at HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. This exciting event features around 2,000 young athletes from 21 districts nationwide, all competing for medals.
Isireli Koroituku, the jump coach for the Yasawa team, shared his enthusiasm for the event, emphasizing the team’s goal to not just participate but to bring home medals. Comprising 105 talented athletes from eight local schools, the team is determined to make their mark this year after focusing on exposure in the previous games.
Preparations have been robust, and Koroituku expressed confidence leading into the competition. However, the journey to Suva was not without its challenges, particularly in securing accommodation. The team overcame this hurdle by remaining positive and successfully finding lodging just days before the event.
Koroituku highlighted the team’s fundraising efforts, which included selling root crops, kava barrels, and hosting curry nights to support their travel and participation. He extended heartfelt gratitude to the Yasawa community and the support from local leaders and shareholders, crediting them for making this opportunity possible.
Most of the athletes are making their first trip to Suva, adding to the event’s significance as an enlightening experience for them.
In total, the Western Division is represented by six districts with 718 athletes, while the Northern region brings 635 participants, and the Central and Eastern divisions contribute another 597 athletes.
This gathering not only promotes athleticism among the youth but also fosters community spirit and support, indicating a hopeful future for the athletes as they strive for excellence and pride in their districts.
