The Fijian government is embarking on a significant initiative to enhance connectivity to the Yasawa Islands through a major feasibility study for a proposed airport development. Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, announced that this study, undertaken in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Works, will evaluate various technical, environmental, and economic factors essential for the region’s long-term tourism growth and trade development.
Gavoka emphasized that the study’s primary focus will include forecasting passenger numbers and freight capacity, incorporating current travel patterns and regional development plans to assess the airport’s future trajectory. A budget of $500,000 has been allocated from both ministries to facilitate this initiative, with assistance from Fiji Air Force Limited for site assessments and the development of Terms of Reference.
This comprehensive study aims not only to evaluate passenger and freight demand but also to scrutinize potential environmental impacts and ensure compliance with national and international aviation standards. An overarching steering committee will oversee the project’s alignment with the broader Yasawa Connectivity Initiative, ultimately driving sustainable economic benefits for local communities.
In a complementary development, South Sea Cruises is set to introduce the Yasawa Flyer 3 in August, a new 30-meter ferry designed to enhance sea transport in the region with improved capacity and passenger comfort. Gavoka highlighted that these combined efforts in air and sea transport would unlock new opportunities in investment, job creation, and services, ensuring that all communities benefit from Fiji’s developmental agenda.
The planned airport development is seen as a pivotal step towards elevating the Yasawa Islands as a significant tourist destination, paralleled by prior government efforts to modernize infrastructure across Fiji, including upgrades to existing airports.
