Yaqona has been identified as the leading agricultural commodity among the nine top contributors to Fiji’s agricultural gross domestic product (GDP) for 2023. According to the Fiji Agricultural Statistics, yaqona accounted for $234.6 million, representing a 27.9 percent share with a growth rate of 3.1 percent.
In addition to yaqona, vegetables made a notable contribution of $79.3 million to the GDP, which is 9.4 percent of the total, along with a remarkable growth of 30.8 percent. Taro followed with a contribution of $67.9 million (8.1 percent of the GDP), reflecting a 2.1 percent increase.
Cassava also played a significant role, contributing $59.5 million (7.1 percent of the GDP) and experiencing a positive growth of 13.9 percent. Meanwhile, poultry contributed $25.7 million (3.1 percent) but faced a decline with negative growth of 7.3 percent.
Bananas saw a 22.5 percent increase, contributing $16.2 million (1.9 percent of the GDP), while beef added $13.4 million (1.6 percent), achieving a positive growth rate of 23.5 percent. Other livestock contributed $11.8 million (1.4 percent of the GDP) with a growth rate of 12.3 percent. Lastly, ginger contributed $8.9 million (1.1 percent) to the GDP, enjoying a positive growth of 10.4 percent.
