Yaqona Theft Crisis: Police Take a Stand in Taveuni

Yaqona theft in Taveuni is becoming increasingly concerning, with reports indicating an average of two incidents daily. In light of this troubling trend, Superintendent of Police Eroni Soqosoqo, the Acting Divisional Police Commander of North, has established a special task force dedicated to combating these thefts.

The initiative includes heightened visibility patrols across key farming regions such as Qila, Masasa, Ura, Qarawalu, Soqulu, and Salialevu. The task force has engaged with local yaqona farmers, providing assurances of serious efforts to address the issue at hand. Yaqona—the powdered form of kava—is not only culturally significant in Fiji but is also essential for the livelihoods of many farmers in Taveuni. The recent surge in thefts puts their sole source of income at risk, raising pressing concerns within the community.

SP Soqosoqo expressed that these criminals often take advantage of the challenging terrain, but reiterated the police’s determination to dismantle the networks behind these crimes. The police have already made several arrests in the past week and are prioritizing the apprehension of third parties who may be receiving stolen yaqona.

In light of the rampant theft, the government has launched a community-oriented approach, recalling that past measures such as simply relying on prayer failed to yield results. Local farmers have been urged to report any suspicious activity, particularly the movement of unknown individuals in their communities, which may be related to the theft.

The demand for yaqona remains strong, with local farmers not only supplying Taveuni but extending their trade to areas like Labasa, where prices have recently risen due to adverse weather conditions affecting supply. The provincial government is taking steps to address the issue, such as registering local yaqona farmers to better monitor sales and purchases.

While the predicament of yaqona theft is severe, the proactive measures being undertaken offer a glimpse of hope for the agricultural communities in Taveuni. By fostering collaboration between law enforcement and local farmers, the region can work towards reclaiming safety and stability, ensuring that farmers can cultivate their crops without the looming threat of theft. This combined effort reflects a community’s resilience and commitment to preserving their livelihoods and cultural heritage.
