Yaqona has been identified as the leading agricultural commodity among the top nine crops and livestock that contributed to the agricultural gross domestic product (GDP) in 2023. Data from Fiji Agricultural Statistics reveals that yaqona contributed $234.6 million, accounting for 27.9 percent of the GDP, with a positive growth rate of 3.1 percent.
In addition to yaqona, vegetables made a significant impact by contributing $79.3 million (9.4 percent) to the GDP, reflecting a remarkable growth of 30.8 percent. Taro followed with a contribution of $67.9 million (8.1 percent) and a growth rate of 2.1 percent.
Cassava also played a role, contributing $59.5 million (7.1 percent) to the GDP, achieving a growth of 13.9 percent. However, poultry showed a decline, generating $25.7 million (3.1 percent) with a negative growth of 7.3 percent.
Meanwhile, bananas reported a positive growth of 22.5 percent with a GDP contribution of $16.2 million (1.9 percent). Beef contributed $13.4 million (1.6 percent) to the GDP, experiencing a notable growth of 23.5 percent. Other livestock contributed $11.8 million (1.4 percent) with a positive growth rate of 12.3 percent, while ginger added $8.9 million (1.1 percent) to the GDP, achieving a growth of 10.4 percent.
