Yaqona Sales Surge: Local Farmers Reap Rewards

In the month of November, farmers in Fiji are seeing a positive trend in their crop sales, particularly with the production and sale of yaqona (kava) and various food items, which is contributing to better living standards.

Simione Caginivalu, a resident from Boteinaulu in Wainimala, shared that he recently sold only three bags of yaqona and made $1,700. At 30 years old, Caginivalu is making the most of his land, and is optimistic about the yields he’s obtaining from it. He attributes his success to the lessons learned from his father about the importance of land management and productivity.

Despite challenges, he continues to focus on improving his agricultural methods and using his land efficiently. There has been a strong interest in growing crops such as yaqona, taro, and other staple foods, as they are in high demand in markets throughout the region.

Caginivalu also noted that while some farmers are working far from home, they frequently return to their communities to manage their land better. He mentioned that the price of yaqona has been favorable lately, ranging from $80 to $100 per kilogram, depending on quality and size.

With recent figures indicating that communities have generated significant earnings from yaqona sales, Caginivalu recalled a recent market day where three areas reported sales exceeding $200,000 in yaqona alone.

However, farmers face challenges, especially with transportation costs and the logistics of getting their goods to market. Despite this, Caginivalu remains hopeful, emphasizing the importance of community support and returning to their roots to ensure sustainable living.

He encourages young people to consider returning to their villages for a balanced lifestyle that fosters both agriculture and community well-being.
