Yaqona Reigns Supreme: Fiji’s Agricultural GDP Champion!

Yaqona has been recognized as the leading agricultural commodity among the top nine crops and livestock contributing to the country’s agricultural gross domestic product (GDP) in 2023. As reported by Fiji Agricultural Statistics, yaqona accounted for $234.6 million, representing a 27.9 percent share and experiencing a growth rate of 3.1 percent.

In addition, vegetables contributed $79.3 million, which is 9.4 percent of the GDP, marking a remarkable growth of 30.8 percent. Taro also played a significant role, contributing $67.9 million or 8.1 percent of the GDP, with a growth rate of 2.1 percent.

Cassava added $59.5 million, accounting for 7.1 percent of the GDP and achieving a growth of 13.9 percent. Poultry, on the other hand, contributed $25.7 million (3.1 percent) but faced a decline with a negative growth of 7.3 percent.

Banana showed impressive growth at 22.5 percent, contributing $16.2 million or 1.9 percent of the GDP, while beef contributed $13.4 million (1.6 percent), with a notable growth rate of 23.5 percent. Other livestock made a contribution of $11.8 million to the GDP (1.4 percent), with a positive growth of 12.3 percent.

Finally, ginger contributed $8.9 million towards the GDP (1.1 percent), realizing a growth of 10.4 percent.
