Yaqona has been identified as the leading agricultural product among the top nine commodities that significantly contributed to the agricultural gross domestic product (GDP) in 2023. Fiji Agricultural Statistics report that yaqona generated $234.6 million, representing a 27.9 percent contribution and demonstrating a positive growth of 3.1 percent.
In addition, vegetables made a notable contribution of $79.3 million to the GDP, accounting for 9.4 percent, with an impressive growth rate of 30.8 percent. Taro contributed $67.9 million, or 8.1 percent of the GDP, with a growth of 2.1 percent.
Cassava added $59.5 million to the GDP, representing 7.1 percent, with a positive growth of 13.9 percent. In contrast, poultry contributed $25.7 million, making up 3.1 percent of the GDP, but experienced a decline of 7.3 percent.
Bananas showed a healthy growth of 22.5 percent, contributing $16.2 million to the GDP, which is 1.9 percent. Beef brought in $13.4 million, or 1.6 percent of the total GDP, with a significant growth of 23.5 percent. Other livestock accounted for $11.8 million (1.4 percent) of the GDP and achieved a growth of 12.3 percent. Lastly, ginger contributed $8.9 million, which is 1.1 percent of the GDP, reflecting a growth of 10.4 percent.
