Yaqona has been identified as the leading agricultural commodity among the top nine crop and livestock products that significantly contributed to the agricultural gross domestic product (GDP) in 2023. According to the latest statistics from Fiji Agricultural Statistics, yaqona accounted for $234.6 million, representing 27.9 percent of the GDP, and experienced a positive growth of 3.1 percent.
Vegetables made a substantial contribution of $79.3 million, or 9.4 percent of the GDP, reflecting an impressive growth of 30.8 percent. Taro followed with a contribution of $67.9 million, which is 8.1 percent of the GDP, offering a positive growth of 2.1 percent.
Cassava also showed a positive performance, contributing $59.5 million, which is 7.1 percent of the GDP, with a growth rate of 13.9 percent. In contrast, the poultry sector contributed $25.7 million (3.1 percent) but faced a decline with a negative growth of 7.3 percent.
Bananas exhibited strong growth at 22.5 percent, contributing $16.2 million to the GDP, amounting to 1.9 percent. Beef production brought in $13.4 million, or 1.6 percent of the GDP, with a positive growth of 23.5 percent. Additionally, other livestock contributed $11.8 million to the GDP (1.4 percent), with a growth of 12.3 percent, while ginger contributed $8.9 million, accounting for 1.1 percent of the GDP, and recorded a positive growth of 10.4 percent.
