In this month of November, the agricultural sector in Wainimala, Naitasiri is witnessing a positive upward trend as farmers leverage their land to produce yaqona and other staple foods, contributing to a better living standard. Simione Caginivalu, a 30-year-old farmer from Boteinaulu, shared that he recently earned $1,700 from the sale of just three bags of yaqona. This success highlights the potential for agricultural growth in the region.

Caginivalu emphasized the significance of land cultivation, reflecting on how his father instilled the importance of utilizing the land wisely to yield beneficial crops. His commitment to agriculture has not only allowed him to improve his crops but also supported the local community by supplying essential food items.

Despite the occasional challenges, such as the fluctuating market demands and unpredictable pricing for yaqona, Caginivalu remains optimistic about the future. He noted that young farmers are able to earn substantial amounts from sales, particularly during peak seasons where sales exceed $200,000 across several villages.

Although there are still obstacles like transportation costs and reaching distant marketplaces, Caginivalu’s vision for the future remains hopeful. He encourages the youth to return to agriculture, emphasizing the stability and potential wealth of a life dedicated to farming.

As the yaqona industry experiences fluctuations in price, with current market rates averaging between $80 and $100 per kilo, farmers in regions such as Lautoka, Ba, and Tavua are also capitalizing on the demand.

Caginivalu’s story is a testament to the resilience of farmers and their pivotal role in the community; he embodies the spirit of growth that can emerge from dedication to agriculture, providing hope for future generations.

This article serves as a reminder that, with hard work and commitment, agricultural pursuits can lead to fruitful rewards, helping to uplift communities economically and socially.
