The upgraded risk-informed evacuation center for the villagers of Yalobi in Waya, Yasawa, was officially opened on Wednesday, providing shelter for over 200 individuals in case of future disasters.

Constructed by the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, in collaboration with the UN Development Programme’s (UNDP) Governance for Resilient Development in the Pacific initiative (Gov4Res), the facility was developed at a cost exceeding FJ$60,000.

This center is specifically designed to address various risks faced by vulnerable groups in the Yalobi community, featuring ramps for accessibility for individuals with disabilities, an indoor kitchen, washrooms, and solar lighting.

These enhancements aim to safeguard the well-being of women, children, the elderly, and people with disabilities during natural disasters.

At the opening ceremony, residents of Yalobi reminisced about their harrowing experience during Tropical Cyclone Bebe in 1972, which forced them to hike uphill for three hours to find refuge in a cave. In more recent disasters, villagers have had no designated evacuation center and often took shelter in their homes. The community expressed appreciation to the Government, donors, and UNDP for this crucial support, which they believe will significantly enhance their safety.

Jovesa Vocea, Assistant Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, highlighted the significance of ensuring that developments in rural and maritime areas consider risk factors to enhance long-term resilience.

Vocea described the Yalobi Risk Informed Evacuation Centre as more than just a structure; it serves as a vital resource for the villagers. He also noted that the center will serve as a hub for community engagement and empowerment, particularly benefiting women and youth.

Furthermore, the facility will host various socio-economic activities aimed at strengthening the local Yalobi community.

Nicola Glendining, UNDP Pacific Gov4Res Project Manager, expressed pride in collaborating with the Ministry to bolster the resilience of rural communities in Fiji and advance the ministry’s strategic objectives.
