A yacht that recently washed ashore in Vunikodi Village, Udu Point, has been identified as being registered in Papeete, French Polynesia. Historical records reveal that the vessel sank on May 26, 2025, near Moorea Island, raising questions about its journey before arriving on Fiji’s shores.

In the wake of this discovery, a coordinated investigation is underway involving the Fiji Police Force, Fiji Revenue and Customs Service, and the Republic of Fiji Navy. These forces are working alongside regional law enforcement partners to establish the yacht’s origins and uncover the circumstances surrounding its sinking.

Authorities in French Polynesia have provided information indicating that the yacht’s owner had previously made several attempts to relocate the vessel, even going so far as to charter a plane. However, on May 26 last year, the yacht was reported overturned in the ocean.

Preliminary examinations by police and maritime officials reveal that the yacht had likely been adrift for an extended period, evident from the considerable damage found within the interior. The ongoing investigation aims to shed light on the yacht’s journey and the events that led to its current state. This situation highlights the collaborative efforts among Pacific nations in ensuring maritime security and addressing incidents on the high seas.
