Apenai Turaganikeli, the third witness in the ongoing trial against nine individuals accused of importing and possessing methamphetamine, testified in the Lautoka Court, voicing his suspicions regarding the illicit activities aboard a yacht. Turaganikeli recounted his involvement in loading sealed containers onto a barge, revealing that he was informed by the barge’s captain, Ratu Isoa Dina, that the cargo was, in fact, methamphetamine.

Dina also expressed fear during the loading process, confirming his concerns that the cargo might contain illegal drugs. Both witnesses outlined their roles in a series of trips to the Yasawa waters, where they were instructed by David Heritage, one of the accused and Turaganikeli’s brother-in-law. Evidence presented in court indicated that Heritage was receiving directions from a Russian individual introduced to him by Justin Ho, also among the accused.

This trial is part of a larger case involving over 4.15 tonnes of methamphetamine, believed to be one of Fiji’s most significant drug seizures to date. Previous testimonies have highlighted the extensive operations aimed at smuggling drugs via maritime routes, emphasizing the judiciary’s commitment to tackling drug-related offenses.

As the trial continues, the involvement of multiple witnesses and their testimonies reflect a hopeful outlook for the justice system in Fiji, signaling a robust approach towards dismantling drug trafficking networks. The proceedings are expected to reinforce public safety and restore trust in the legal framework, contributing to a safer community for all.
