The BA zone champion Xavier College is gearing up for the 2025 Coca-Cola Games, which kick off on Thursday. While often overshadowed by larger athletics schools, Xavier College has established itself as a powerhouse, particularly in the jumps category. Team manager Jonelle Muller has emphasized that this year focuses on long-term growth rather than immediate success.
“Xavier College may not always be at the forefront of conversations around athletics, but those who know recognize we are a forgotten powerhouse,” Muller stated. The current strategy is about nurturing young athletes and providing them opportunities on bigger platforms, embodying this year’s vision of “Youth and Exposure.”
Distinctly low-key compared to its rivals, the school is harnessing a quiet confidence in its future prospects. “There’s strength in subtlety,” Muller said, as both athletes and coaches continue to focus on foundational performance without the pressures of overt competition. Despite encountering various challenges throughout the year—logistical, emotional, and physical—Muller underscored the team’s resilience, leaning on their collective belief: “Do your best and leave the rest to God.”
Key athletes to watch include Ilisabeta Bulivale in the Intermediate Girls Triple Jump, who has shown remarkable promise, and Willie Wise, a fierce competitor in the High Jump and 400m dash. Moreover, Simione Kaiwalu is another standout, following in the footsteps of his older brother Malakai Kaiwalu, aiming for success in the Senior Boys High Jump.
Xavier College’s commitment mirrors a growing trend among schools throughout Fiji, reflecting a collective effort to cultivate athletic talent and resilience among students. This spirit of supporting youth athletes is vital for a future rich in sports culture, showcasing their hard work on prestigious stages like the Coca-Cola Games. As the excitement builds for the event, there’s a tangible sense of hope for the young athletes’ achievements and the continued fostering of grassroots talent across the nation.
