World Soil Day 2025 was celebrated at Syria Park in Nausori, emphasizing the vital role of engaging young people in soil conservation and environmental stewardship. With the global theme “Healthy Soils for Healthy Cities,” the event highlighted practical learning focused on how soil health is interconnected with community resilience, climate adaptation, and sustainable urban development.
During the celebration, youth participants actively planted fruit trees and vetiver grass at various locations, including Syria Park, Nakasi Market, and along the Dilkusha riverbank. These efforts symbolized a commitment to greening urban spaces while simultaneously combating soil erosion.
Students participated in hands-on demonstrations exploring soil coring and studying soil horizons, which enhanced their understanding of soil structure and composition. Additionally, on-site testing of soil pH levels demonstrated its influence on nutrient availability for crops, further underscoring the importance of soil management.
The program featured exhibits showcasing sustainable soil practices, along with the distribution of planting materials to community groups, reinforcing the message that caring for the land is a collective responsibility. The overarching theme of the day was clear: protecting soil is essential for ensuring food security, promoting healthy environments, and building resilient cities.
For the youth of Fiji, this event served not only as a celebration but as a renewed commitment to taking actionable steps toward environmental preservation and soil health. Their involvement marks a hopeful and proactive approach towards creating a more sustainable future.
