World Bank Boosts Health Support in Fiji: What’s Next?

The World Bank is set to enhance its support for health sectors in Fiji and the broader Pacific region through financial and technical assistance. This initiative was announced by World Bank President Ajay Banga during his visit to the Nuffield Health Clinic in Tamavua, alongside Fiji’s Minister for Health, Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu.

Currently in Fiji, Mr. Banga is engaging in discussions with the government on various topics, particularly healthcare challenges. He shared that the World Bank has conducted a health report for Fiji, serving as a baseline for the country to allocate more resources, both financially and intellectually, towards healthcare.

Mr. Banga emphasized the importance of collaboration among Pacific Island nations, particularly given their small populations. He noted that larger communities in the region could help establish necessary regional infrastructures to support healthcare provision.

During his visit, Mr. Banga observed the commitment of health professionals working under significant constraints and highlighted the importance of community outreach for prevention and early disease detection. He reaffirmed the World Bank’s commitment to improving primary healthcare, aiming to reach 1.5 billion people by 2030 with enhanced facilities. This effort includes early disease detection through diagnostic centers and educational initiatives similar to the current work being done by the Ministry of Education in local schools.

In addressing global challenges, Mr. Banga pointed out the issue of skills loss as a significant hurdle. He expressed the bank’s commitment to aiding Fiji in dealing with this challenge by improving the local environment and fostering a sense of pride among health professionals serving their communities.

The World Bank’s engagement in Fiji’s healthcare sector began with a $7.35 million COVID-19 Emergency Response Project, which was approved in June 2020 and is set to conclude in June 2024.
