Mental health in the workplace is a critical concern that can significantly impact employees’ well-being and productivity. Mohammed Altaab Khan, a Certified Emotional Intelligence Life Coach, highlighted these concerns during the 2025 Fiji Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) conference hosted by Fiji National University’s National Training and Productivity Centre. He emphasized the necessity of psychological safety in workplace environments, likening ineffective strategies to an engine that lacks fuel—efficient planning without mental health support leads nowhere.

Khan pointed out that the stress of unsafe mental health conditions keeps employees in a persistent state of alertness, which subsequently can lead to anxiety, burnout, or even depression. He urged attendees to reflect on workplace culture and its profound impacts not only on individuals but also on families and communities, a sentiment echoed in previous discussions surrounding workplace health highlighted by labor leaders like Muniappa Goundar. They noted that many individuals face unrecognized stress and mental health challenges influenced by demanding job conditions and inadequate employer support.

The connection between psychological and physical safety was also addressed. Khan stated that incidents causing physical harm to employees can lead to emotional and psychological repercussions, thus affecting the overall workplace environment. A focus on mental and emotional well-being is crucial for organizations to foster inclusivity and drive productivity.

The rise in mental health issues in the workplace necessitates proactive steps from both employers and employees. Collaborative efforts can lead to a more supportive work environment, ultimately benefiting individuals, organizations, and society as a whole.

With the ongoing global conversation about mental health—including initiatives from organizations like the World Health Organization (WHO) advocating for improved workplace conditions—it is hopeful that increased awareness will lead to meaningful reforms in how businesses address these critical issues. By prioritizing mental health, workplaces can foster a culture of care and support, paving the way for a brighter future for all involved.
