Workers Gear Up for Major Hospital Strike in Fiji

Healthcare workers at the Aspen Lautoka and Ba hospitals are gearing up for a strike set to commence at 7 a.m. on February 6, 2025. The announcement was made by the Construction Energy and Timber Workers Union of Fiji (CETWUF), which represents around 200 employees including chefs, ward assistants, pharmacists, maintenance workers, ambulance drivers, security guards, and administrative staff.

CETWUF National Secretary John Paul communicated with union members during a meeting held outside the Ba Hospital today, as representatives were barred from entering the facility. He emphasized that if ongoing disputes regarding wages and working conditions are not addressed by the strike date, workers will stop working.

The planned strike is a culmination of frustrations surrounding unresolved grievances dating back to 2017, particularly concerning salary adjustments that have not kept pace with rising living costs. The union has highlighted the urgency of these demands and expressed disappointment over the lack of progress in negotiations with Aspen Medical.

Previous articles have documented the growing tensions between the union and Aspen Medical, showcasing a persistent call for wage increases that reflect the changing economic landscape. This situation not only highlights the critical labor rights issues facing healthcare workers in Fiji but also the potential for meaningful discussions aimed at improving work conditions.

While the impending strike may cause disruptions in hospital operations, it represents a crucial moment for dialogue and a chance for constructive resolutions that could ultimately benefit both healthcare workers and the patients they serve. There is cautious optimism that through collaboration and continued advocacy, a fair outcome can be achieved that recognizes the essential role of these workers in the healthcare system.
