Women’s Teams Gear Up for Thrilling Na-Iri Trophy Showdown!

Next week, twelve women’s rugby teams will compete for the esteemed Na-Iri trophy during the 2025 McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament in Sigatoka. This exciting three-day event is set to shine particularly in the women’s division, especially with the inclusion of the New Zealand women’s 7s team, who are viewed as strong contenders for the title.

Tournament founder Jay Whyte stated that the New Zealand team will face formidable challenges from the Mt Masada (Fijiana 7s) team, who are eager to prove themselves after facing some tough competitions. He also emphasized that the Drua women’s 7s team is poised to add a unique flair to the tournament, indicating their potential as a tough competitor.

Joining these teams are the Pacific Nomads, Lilian Amazon, Ezers Women’s, Tagimoucia Ranadi, Bilo Bar Aflame Women’s, Seahawks, Lava City Women’s Rugby- Savusavu, Tuva Rugby, and the Kadavu women’s team.

Whyte expressed enthusiasm about this year’s event, noting that it allows the best of Fiji to compete against top-tier teams from around the world. The Coral Coast 7s is well-regarded globally, attracting significant attention through its social media presence and engagement from rugby fans and communities.

In 2024, the title was claimed by Matakesi from New Zealand, while Mt Masada finished as runners-up.

This year’s tournament not only promises thrilling matches but also celebrates the spirit of women’s sports, fostering competition that could inspire future generations of female athletes.
