Next week, twelve women’s teams will compete for the prestigious Na-Iri trophy at the 2025 McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s in Sigatoka. This three-day tournament promises to deliver exciting performances, particularly in the women’s division, which will showcase the much-anticipated participation of the New Zealand women’s 7s team.
Tournament founder Jay Whyte expressed that the New Zealand team is the clear favorite to win in 2025, but they will face tough competition from the Mt Masada team (the shadow Fijiana 7s team), which aims to rebound after previous challenges. The Drua women’s 7s team is also expected to add an exciting dynamic to the matches, with Whyte noting their competitiveness.
Joining these teams are Pacific Nomads, Lilian Amazon, Ezers Women’s, Tagimoucia Ranadi, Bilo Bar Aflame Women’s, Seahawks, Lava City Women’s Rugby- Savusavu, Tuva Rugby, and Kadavu’s women’s team.
Whyte emphasized the significance of this tournament, highlighting its ability to bring together the best of Fiji and international rugby talent. The event has garnered significant attention globally, as reflected in the robust engagement on social media.
Last year’s title was claimed by Matakesi from New Zealand, with Mt Masada finishing as runners-up. As the tournament draws near, excitement builds for an electrifying display of women’s rugby that showcases skill, resilience, and sportsmanship.
This event not only highlights the rising profile of women’s rugby but also fosters a spirit of competition and community, uniting teams and fans from around the world to celebrate the sport.
