Twelve women’s teams are set to compete for the prestigious Na-Iri trophy at the upcoming 2025 McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament in Sigatoka next week. The women’s division promises an exhilarating experience, particularly with the inclusion of the highly regarded New Zealand women’s 7s team as the favorites for the title.

Tournament founder Jay Whyte noted that the New Zealand team will face formidable challenges from the Mt Masada (Fijiana 7s) team, which is keen to bounce back following some recent struggles. The Drua women’s 7s team is also expected to enhance the competition’s excitement, with Whyte believing they could prove to be tough contenders.

Joining the favored teams are others like Pacific Nomads, Lilian Amazon, Ezers Women’s, Tagimoucia Ranadi, Bilo Bar Aflame Women’s, Seahawks, Lava City Women’s Rugby-Savusavu, Tuva Rugby, and the Kadavu women’s team.

Whyte expressed his enthusiasm for this year’s event, highlighting its importance as a platform where the best of Fiji can compete against top-tier teams from across the globe. The tournament has garnered significant attention within the international rugby community, as reflected by the growing engagement on social media channels.

Last year, the women’s title was claimed by Matakesi from New Zealand, with Mt Masada securing the runner-up position.

This tournament not only showcases the talent of women’s rugby teams but also carries the potential for increased recognition and support for women’s sports in the region. It serves as an inspiring example of the increasing visibility and competitiveness of women athletes on an international stage. Overall, it is an awaited event that promises thrilling matches and a celebration of women’s rugby.
