Women from diverse backgrounds rallied in Suva for a significant International Women’s Day march, focusing on their right to safety and equality. The event was energized by chants calling for safer schools, churches, and public spaces, while underscoring women’s empowerment and the call for gender equality.

Shamima Ali, Coordinator of the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre (FWCC), emphasized the urgent need for progress in bridging the ongoing gaps in women’s rights and safety. She encouraged women to express themselves and remain active, promoting unity as a source of strength in tackling challenges. “Do not suffer in silence; call out violence, utilize the toll-free helpline, and stand in solidarity with each other,” Ali stated, stressing the importance of collective action against threats to women’s rights.

The atmosphere in Fiji has evolved over the years, particularly since the introduction of events like the “Reclaim The Night” march, which started in 1987 with just 30 participants and has grown considerably since. Although local authorities allowed a maximum of 800 participants this year, they imposed restrictions on political expressions, reinforcing the necessity for secure environments for women and children.

Activists have previously raised concerns about government restrictions that can limit the freedom of assembly and speech, potentially obstructing the pursuit of women’s rights. Events like this march not only advocate for immediate concerns but also stimulate broader conversations about human rights issues, seeking systemic change within Fijian society.

Amidst the gathering, participants exhibited a hopeful and determined spirit, signaling a commitment to enacting change. Organizations like the FWCC continue to play a vital role in advocating for women’s rights and amplifying their voices in response to ongoing challenges. This march not only represents a local struggle for equality but also aligns with global movements fighting for the rights and dignity of women everywhere.
