The ongoing 2025 sugarcane crushing season is highlighting the pivotal role of women in agriculture, particularly in Nawaicoba, Nadi, where members of the Soqosoqo Vakamarama ni iTaukei (SSViT) ni Yasana ko Ba are making significant strides. These women are not only participating in the physically demanding task of cane harvesting but are also challenging traditional gender roles, fostering change, and uplifting their families and communities with every cane they cut.

Adi Sivia Qoro, the president of SSViT Ba, expressed pride in the resilience of these women, stating, “Their presence in the fields is a powerful reminder that no role is too hard, no space too far, and no dream out of reach when women lead with courage and heart.” The commitment of these women reflects their dedication to both their work and their communities, as they are seen as leaders in fields previously dominated by men.

In addition to their work in sugarcane, the women of SSViT Ba are integrating climate change prevention strategies into their activities. They have been involved in various initiatives, such as riverbank and coastal rehabilitation, livestock farming, and sustainable agricultural practices, showcasing their leadership in fostering climate resilience. This includes reforestation efforts and technical analyses of the value chain in agriculture.

Last week, members of SSViT Ba participated in a consultation with landowners from the tikina of Viwa discussing the potential of sustainable pearl farming as an economic opportunity for their communities. Such initiatives not only empower women but also create pathways for sustainable livelihoods across various sectors.

As these women actively participate in agriculture and environmental stewardship, their efforts symbolize progress, resilience, and hope for a future where gender equality thrives. The encouragement of women’s leadership in both agriculture and climate initiatives signifies a transformative movement within the community, paving the way for further advancements and opportunities for generations to come.
