Women Leaders Uniting Amid Conflict: A Powerful Call for Change

Foreign Affairs Minister Lenora Qereqeretabua emphasized the importance of communication among women leaders in conflict zones during the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Apia, Samoa. Speaking at a women’s forum, she highlighted that despite numerous conflicts around the world, women leaders are reaching out to one another, showcasing their support and unity in the Pacific region.

During her panel discussion, Ms. Qereqeretabua pointed out that many challenges faced by women across the Commonwealth are similar, underscoring the necessity of encouraging women to uplift each other into leadership roles. She noted that the dialogue among women leaders from rival nations is particularly inspiring, as it demonstrates collaboration beyond national divides.

Ms. Qereqeretabua remarked, “As enablers, we should facilitate younger women stepping into leadership positions, which is truly encouraging.” She also stressed the importance of learning from one another, highlighting how women across different sectors can foster conversations that allow younger women to claim their space as older generations make way.

“It’s reassuring to see women engaging in dialogue with counterparts from nations they may be at odds with,” she concluded.
