Women Lead Fiji's Pearl Farming Milestone

Women Lead Fiji’s Pearl Farming Milestone

The Ministry of Fisheries’ Pearl Team has achieved a significant milestone by successfully completing pearl implantation activities in Nawaikama, Gau, showcasing a strong commitment to community empowerment and sustainable aquaculture. This initiative prominently involved women from the local community, who took the lead in preparing chaplets for pearl oysters, cleaning spat (young oysters), and mastering vital implantation techniques.

In collaboration with the Ministry’s team, the women successfully implanted a total of 1,005 beads of various species, including civa and melamela, over the course of several days. This undertaking not only highlights the government’s dedication to sustainable resource management but also emphasizes the importance of inclusive economic growth, allowing women to actively participate in the blue economy and directly benefit from marine-based livelihoods.

Similar initiatives, such as the recent inauguration of the Savusavu Mabe Pearl Oyster and Handicraft showroom spearheaded by Minister for Fisheries and Forestry Alitia Bainivalu, further underscore this commitment to enhancing local livelihoods through sustainable practices. The showroom aims to serve as a hub for grafting, value addition, and marketing, allowing local artisans to preserve their traditional skills while stimulating economic growth.

Minister Bainivalu has reflected on the long-standing partnerships with organizations such as the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) and the University of Sunshine Coast, which have been instrumental in developing aquaculture practices in Fiji since the 1980s. These collaborative efforts not only focus on economic opportunities but also empower local artisans, preserving cultural heritage while ensuring sustainable income generation.

The initiatives undertaken by both the Pearl Team and the newly established showroom represent hopeful strides toward fostering resilient and thriving communities. By combining community engagement with environmental stewardship, these projects aim to uplift local economies while respecting and enhancing cultural practices. The results of these efforts promise a brighter future, showcasing how sustainable practices can lead to economic prosperity and community pride.
